Loretta Irene Hanekamp Wednesday, May 17, 1939 - Sunday, February 12, 2017
Cumberland, MD – Loretta Irene (Petenbrink) Hanekamp, 77, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care.
Born May 17, 1939, in Wellersburg, PA, Mrs. Hanekamp was the youngest of seven daughters to the late Samuel Irvin Petenbrink and Ella Catherine (Conner) Petenbrink. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Charles Norman Hanekamp, Sr.; her son: Charles N. Hanekamp, Jr.; and a daughter: Rayanna S. Hanekamp.
After graduating from Allegany High School, Class of 1957, Loretta moved to Washington, DC, to work for the Department of Agriculture. As the fast pace of Washington was just too fast, she decided to return home to Cumberland where she married Charles Hanekamp, Sr., an employee of the Old German/Old Export Brewery. Loretta stayed at home with her children for many years. She returned to the working world with the s. Schwab Company and City Cleaners. Loretta was involved with school committees, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Troop #89, where she was the mom of an Eagle Scout, Troop Committee, Chairperson, Special Olympics at both County and State Levels, Friends Aware, Friends Aware Social Committee, and Belles and Beaus Square Dancers. Loretta was a member of the Zion Independent Church. Through the years, she enjoyed traveling to many different states but she loved Alaska. Loretta has been in ill health after having suffered a major stroke several years ago.
Loretta is survived by her sister: Betty Harman; her son-in-law: Donald Fischer, and his children: Ben and Barbra. She is also survived by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., and from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 11:00 A.M.
Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
