LaVale, MD – The soul of Lester Edwin Porter, Sr., 87, of LaVale, MD, left this world for his home in Heaven on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born December 11, 1929, in Yellow Creek, PA, Mr. Porter was the son of the late Pastor Elmer A. Porter and Hazel (Garlock) Porter. He was also preceded in death by his best friend and wife, Gertrude L. (Gordon) Porter. They enjoyed many years together, never to be parted until her death in 2012. They could always be found holding hands, watching TV, and keeping each other company. He missed her dearly. They both enjoyed being members of the First Church of God, Cumberland, MD, and enjoyed the simple pleasures their life offered and dedicated their lives to rearing children and caring for their family. Lester would sometimes say, “You are born and then you die, it is the dash in between you have to figure out.” Mr. Porter was also preceded in death by five brothers, one sister, one granddaughter, one grandson, and a daughter-in-law.
Lester was a proud United States Army veteran of World War II having served as a Medic from October 1946 until April 1952. During the 1970s, He also proudly served as a Member of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Posse that he thoroughly enjoyed. Lester retired from Tri-state Roofing Company after 33 years. He was a self-taught man who then established a very successful locksmith business, Les and Son Locksmith Service that remains in operation today.
Lester is survived by his children: Edwin Porter; Marguerite Kastner and husband, Bruce; David Porter and wife, Kathy; Brenda Fulton and husband, Tom; Joan Lawrence and husband, Todd; Lester E. Porter, Jr., and wife, Paula; Danny Porter and wife, Suzanne; Mark Porter and wife, Trisha; Sue Lindsay and husband, Wes; George Garlitz and wife, Rosetta; Mary Folk and husband, Robert; Sandra Wolford and husband Tom; and Sherry Slenker and husband, Bob. He also leaves behind his sisters: Grace Lyons; Marguerite Dentler and husband, Sam; and Mary Knippenburg; as well as 28 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, 18 nieces, and nephews.
His name to all who knew him was dad, daddy, pappy, of Uncle Lester. He was known for and will be fondly remember as a jokester, his quick wit, and his sense of humor. He will be sadly missed.

His family extends their appreciation to his in-home caregivers, Hospice, the Nursing Staff at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Staff during his illness and especially to his grand kids who brought their babies to his home to visit with him. They always brightened his day and made him laugh at the stories they would tell him.
