Betty Jean (Sweitzer) Steele Wednesday, March 9, 1927 - Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Cumberland, MD – Betty Jean (Sweitzer) Steele, 90, of Cumberland, MD, formerly of Lonaconing, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at her home.
 
Born March 9, 1927, in Swanton, MD, Mrs. Steele was the daughter of the late John C. Sweitzer and Homa A. (Bowser) Sweitzer.  She was also preceded in death by her husband: George Steele in 1975; an infant granddaughter: Velma Chastity Steele; five brothers: Raymond, Carl, Harvey, Gay, and Joy “JD” Sweitzer; seven sisters: Elsie Lee; Laura “Jane” Madigan; Nellie Nazelrod; Mae Beckman; Emma Wilt; Eula Kitzmiller; Jennie “Dottie” Menichi; and a dearest friend and confidant: John B. Wentling.
 
Betty was a homemaker until her husband’s death, and then began working at Luigis Restaurant as a Hostess and Cashier, then worked at Pappy’s Restaurant, before working and retiring from the Allegany County Health Department doing In-Home Care.  She was always lovingly and caringly devoted to her clients and families.
 
Betty is survived by her children: George Wayne Steele and wife, Donna, Eglon, WV; Allen Steele and wife, Karen, Frostburg, MD; Andrew Steele and wife, Cheryl, Chambersburg, PA; Rita Veatch, Tulsa, OK; Leah Hawkins and husband, Bob, Frostburg, MD; and Bonnie Moore and husband, Bob, LaVale, MD.  She also leaves behind her sister: Bonnie Lambert, Swanton, MD; and her nephew who was raised as a brother: Eugene Wilt and wife, Norma, Oakland, MD.  Betty is also survived by her grandchildren: Brenda Upperman (Russell) Faith Phillips (Dave); Jeffrey Steele; Charity Covey (Eric); Robby Hawkins (Amy); Melissa Farrell (James); Connie Green (Charles); Sara Steele; Robert Moore; Christa Moore (Matthew); Heather Brechbiel (Brandt); and Nathan Steele (Leann).  She also leaves behind her great grandchildren: David Leary; Justin Shaffer (Diamond); Daniel Shaffer; David Phillips (April); Tisha Phillips; Bryan Phillips; Gracyn and Noah Covey; Meshach Preston (Morgan); Allison McKenzie; Brooke Hawkins; Ashley, Katie, James, and Jessica Farrell; Charles, Elizabeth, and Amber Green; Kalob and Noah Steele; Abigail and Jacob Moore; Emily Jean and Tyler Brechbiel; Brandon Brechbiel (Michelle); and Alesha Gembe (Jordan); five great-great grandchildren: Courtney and Peyton Shaffer; Alyvia Phillips; Bryson Preston; and Brooke Brechbiel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews who she was very close to; and a special best friend: Linda Lowery and husband, Bobby.
 
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Sunday, June 4, 2017, from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
 
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, June 5, 2017, at 10:00 A.M., with Pastor Dave Hattenfield officiating.
 
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow, MD.
 
We were so blessed to have such a selfless, remarkable, strong, caring, giving, and loving mother and grandmother.  You have given us a lifetime of precious memories that we will always cherish.

So sorry to hear of Betty's passing. She was a wonderful and kind women and will be missed by all who knew her. She raised a wonderful family and I don't think she ever met a stranger, she always made everyone feel at home. Our thoughts and prayers for all the family during this difficult time.

Betty was such a wonderful lady who was very kind and easy to talk to. She was always genuinely concerned about those she knew and loved and she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
